Since this appears to be the season for rule proposals here's mine.

I abolutely love the new MLB playoff system and think TRHL should adopt it. So I propose that we should move to three divisions of four teams per league with the three division winners going straight to the LDS with the two teams with the next best records playing in a wildcard game to get to the LDS.

I think this has worked brilliantly for MLB. It keeps more teams in the race which increases interest at the bottom while at the same time reinvigorating the divisional races because winning the divisions matters again. So it makes things more exciting at both the top and the bottom of the league.

For TRHL it would also have a couple of additional advantages. First, by making it easier to make the playoffs it would encourage teams to build better short term rosters rather than punting a season and spending the auction loading up on young players. With less boom and bust teams the overall level of competition would be higher which I think is good.

Second, by keeping more teams in the race longer it will encourage more active roster management which will hopefully lesson the amount of work droning the games.

And it will do all of this while rewarding the best team for winning their division. It will make the regular season more meaningful, not less.


I think it is the best of all possible worlds.

The wild card era is heresy, and let's abolish the DH while we're at it.

Seriously though, I'm not a big fan of a 1 game playoff in baseball. And I think we'd need some sort of division balancing mechanism from year to year if we were going to try this, lest we end up with all the good teams concentrated in one division.
